Welcome! Our Society is focused on the histories of the communities of Champion, Beacon and Humboldt in Marquette County in the central part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The area was settled during the time of the Civil War largely in connection with the discovery of iron ore in Negaunee in 1844 that led to the exploration and the development of the Marquette Iron Range toward the west, eventually creating the communities in a region that has a rich history related to mining, logging and railroading.

Champion School
Champion School was built in 1919, served the region for 77 years, and is still standing. Picture taken in 1962 – Courtesy D&SM Collection
